Meditation: Easier than you think!

I used to meditate listening to Pink Floyd before even knowing what meditation was.
I would switch off all the lights in my room, put the headphones on, sit on the ground and listen to pink floyd. 
For the following 30-40 min the little Débora would do nothing but listening to Guilmor’s voice and Mason’s drumms attentevely. 
After those minutes I would be back to the reality much more calm, centered and focused. I didn’t know it was called meditation. I thought everybody would listen to music like this.

Nowadays, I am aware that what I used to do it is called meditation.

So what is Meditation?

The definition given by YogaPedia is that meditation is “the process of quieting the mind in order to spend time in thought for relaxation or religious/spiritual purposes. The goal is to attain an inner state of awareness and intensify personal and spiritual growth. In practice, meditation involves concentrated focus on something such as a sound, image or feeling.”

People tend to think that meditation is to sit down in the lotus pose and waiting in silence to be enlighted by the God’s love. The truth is: meditation can be anything that makes you feel calm, focused and rest. I started with Pink floyd. You can start with cooking, running, looking at your children’s smile, watching birds and people walking on the streets. Meditation, as so many beautiful things in life, is simple. 

Meditation is well known by improving mental clarity, energy and focus. It is used as a tool by artists to improve their creativity. It helps going through dificult periods of pain and illness. 

Besides that, it has been proven scientifically to be an important tool to descrease anxiety and stress.

People often refuse to try meditation because they believe it is a absence of thoughts. Personally, I believe meditation is just an attempt to give to your mind some rest. Which helps me to not ignoring my thoughts but to organize them.

After meditation, which for me means laying down, being aware of how my body feels, doing a 8km run or listening to a whole Nirvana album. I feel much more in control of my thoughts and life.

After reading a little bit about meditation, what about trying for 10 days?

Let me tell you how the “classic” meditation works!

There are 6 important steps to have a sucessful meditation session.

1 – Choose a quite place where you know you won’t be disturbed

How many times during your day you are focused on something and for some reason someone or something disturbs you and you lose focus completly? I answer that for your: Too many!

You don’t want that to happen with meditation. You want to make sure that nobody will disturb you. This is time focus on yourself and only yourself.

 2 – Sit or lay down comfortably 

You also want to be comfortable. Use some pillows to give you an extra comfort.

3 – Close your eyes 

Close your eyes. See what is inside. Focus on your senses.

4 – Relax your body from head to toe 

This step is very important. It is the step that allows you to have a better connection with the physical you.

Pay attention to each part of your body starting in your head. Do you feel any kind of tension? Is it pain? is it stiffness? How do you feel? What do you feel?

Do this for each little beautiful part of your body.

5 –  Pay attention to your breathing

Pay attention to the way you breathe without changing it for some minutes. Do you breathe with your chest or with your diaphragm?

After that breathe deeply from 3 to 6 times in a row.

6 – Choose your mantra or word and repeat it silently 

For the last step of your meditation session, choose an intention. You can express it as a mantra.

Mantras help us to focus on what is important for us and not forget the point of our days!

If you intend to be more present during your day you can choose as intention: “I am present in every step I take”.

Who should meditate?

Meditation is something very broad. Meditation is suitable for EVERYBODY. I encourage everybody to try it.

It helps specially the people that have stressful jobs, mental-challenging tasks, students, and anyone that suffers form anxiety . The list is very extense. It seriously help everybody!

How can I start?

As I said before you can start with the “classic” meditation or do more of what makes you calm and centered. You can start in meditation groups or by yourself in the comfort of your home.

I started with an app called Headspace. Nowadays, I do more of what makes me feel better and also use Insight timer time to time. With Insight Timer you have acess to different kinds of meditation, talks and chantings.

Meditation has been a very important tool for me in the last years. It helps me to focus and feel more calm calmer. I invite you to try for at least 10 days and see how it feels for you.

Meditation does not erase your thoughts. It gives you back the control of your life.
